SoCS – funny

My heart sank when I saw Linda’s prompt for SoCS this week: funny. I have missed the last couple of weeks due to illness and wanted to participate this week, but here is the thing – the last word which anyone would use to describe me is funny. Not haha funny and not even peculiar/funny.

I’m much more likely to be described as serious or thoughtful. I don’t joke. I do have a sense of humor, but it is in reacting to others, not any real ability to be amusing myself.

Sorry, Linda, but I fail at funny. I’m sure, though, that lots of other SoCS participants will succeed splendidly at being funny and end your week with levity. Cheers to you and to them!

  1. No worries — not everyone has to actively be funny, plus some who think they are actually aren’t anyway! But I was curious, when you said you have a sense of humor in reaction to others, what makes you laugh, perhaps in books, TV, etc.? Like what kinds of things strike you as funny? I enjoyed your openness in this post and hope you’re doing better health-wise. πŸ™‚

    1. I am doing much better, thanks, although wildly trying to catch up on things. My sense of humor tends toward things that are witty/clever, wordplay, or something that points out the absurdities and contradictions in life. I like The Daily Show and The Colbert Report, except when they get really potty-mouthed.

      1. Glad you’re doing better! Catching up will take some time, so try not to do it all at once which could be stressful and set you back…not saying you would do that, but I have in the past so i thought I’d put in my two cents. πŸ™‚ As for the shows you like, I see what your tastes are and agree; I find those shows good too, most of the time as you said! Hope you’re having a good weekend. πŸ™‚

      2. I admit to the tendency of trying to bounce back too fast, although this time my body made it clear that I had to take it more slowly. I am actually using the opportunity to pare back a few things that had gotten out of hand, which I needed to do as part of my empty nest re-scheduling initiative. I hope you are having a lovely weekend, too!

  2. Thank goodness I am not the only one struggling with this… I am not by nature a “funny” person either. Don’t worry. I get you and feel the same. I am going to look for a funny cartoon or something. πŸ˜€

    1. I am doing much better, although struggling to catch up, especially in learning music for a concert I will be singing in next weekend.

Writing from prompts is actually quite a new phenomenon for me. We do it in the community poetry workshop that I started this year and I have been doing it for SoCS. I know lots of bloggers and poets use daily prompts on a regular basis, but it is not my natural work mode, so I still get nervous with it. I know it’s good for me, though!

      1. That’s why I try to leave my prompts as open to interpretation as possible – so as not to limit. They’re really just to get people writing. And here you’ve proven it worked. πŸ˜€

  3. Hi Joanne, its all a matter of perception isn’t it as to one’s funny ability. Despite your reservations you did manage to write something which is funny considering how you felt about this topic. I hope that makes sense. Also i hope you are feeling much better.
